Hi Tech Greenhouses?

You probably don’t want to be constantly looking after your greenhouse yourself – opening the windows when it gets too hot, going round every few days and all the rest. It’s much easier to get automatic systems to do these chores for you.

To water your plants, you should install irrigation systems. These are basically small pipes that run underground and slowly release water into the soil – greenhouse models are very similar to the ones used on commercial farms, only smaller. These irrigation systems allow you to quite simply and easily set how much water your plants are getting with a tap, instead of you having to go and water them all by hand. Many plants will also respond better to being watered at the roots than they do to being watered on the topsoil, and they will often grow bigger, which is an added bonus.

The other thing you need is a cooling system. While it might seem odd to have a cooling system in a greenhouse, it is possible for them to get so hot inside that all the plants will get cooked and die, especially in a hot summer. Again, the cooling system will be a series of underground pipes, allowing hot air to be taken down underground and stored during the day, and then released when it is cooler in the night.

While greenhouses might seem to be quite basic things altogether, though, there’s nothing stopping you from going all high-tech with them. More advanced systems have electronic climate control, allowing you to set the exact temperature of your greenhouse, and will open and close underground tubes and other escape routes for hot air in order to keep the temperature in your greenhouse tightly controlled. This can be useful for growing plants that only do well in one specific climate, such as some kinds of tropical flowers.

Home Interior Painting 101

A new coat of paint can refresh and revitalize any room in your house. Paint is also a very cost effective way to change the look of a room. The best part about interior painting is that almost anyone can do it—all you need is the right material and a little bit of knowledge.

Painting Supplies

Your supply needs will vary depending upon the room that you are painting and the type of paint that you are using, but here is a basic list to get you started:

• Paint. After you choose a color, you will also need to choose a finish. The finish determines how shiny the paint will be. Choices include flat, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss, and gloss. Flat finish is hard to wipe clean and should only be used in low traffic areas that will not attract dirt. Satin, eggshell, and semi-gloss finishes are easy to wipe clean and can be used almost anywhere. Gloss finish is very shiny and is best reserved for small areas such as trim or molding.

• Paint Applicators. Paint rollers and brushes are necessities. A good paint roller can paint an entire room. Choose one that has a fair amount of nap to it– the thicker the better. When it comes to brushes, everyone has their own individual preference. A small angle brush works well for trim and corners. A three inch flat brush or a paint pad will work well for the places that a paint roller can not reach.

• Miscellaneous Supplies. In addition to paint and paint applicators, you may also need drop cloths, cleaning rags, paint trays, spackling, sandpaper, and a putty knife (if your walls are damaged and need repair), and a ladder or stepladder. The ladder will need to be sturdy and stable to support your movements. Try choosing a ladder with a wide base or a flared bottom like on a Little Giant Ladder.

Painting Tips

When painting, the most important thing you can do is take your time. If you move too fast, things could get sloppy. Also important, is the prep work. Your painting project will go much smoother if you are properly prepared prior to painting. Here are some tips that can help:

• Make sure that you have everything you need by organizing all of your supplies before you start painting.
• Protect your furniture from paint splatters by moving it or covering it up.
• Use low-tack masking tape to tape off baseboards and trim. Remove the tape before the paint dries.
• Paint the walls before painting trim or woodwork.
• Do not apply a second coat of paint until the first coat has dried.

2711824970 341ed1a8db Three Ideas For Purchasing a Wall Fountain.

Water fountains and especially wall fountains have been here for a while, bringing a touch of extravagance and serenity to the most impressive houses around the world. Egyptians used fountains in the open air gardens, while the Farsi build there fountains inside within embedded courtyards as a means of stimulating the gods. Today, water fountains add peacefulness to any garden or indoor décor, providing a way for the most modest areas to be comfortable.
Wall fountains bear all of the finer details of conventional water fountains, but are much more adapting when it comes to room thy use and care than their outside garden counterparts. They can easy be adhered to any wall, indoors and outdoors; a lot of them involve little more than a few basic household tools and water.
So to help you in preparing for your shopping effort, we have three tips for choosing the perfect wall fountain for you and your household:
1. Wall Fountain Materials and Finish. Depending upon if you plan on installing you’re new wall fountain indoors or outdoors, the finish of your wall fountain can change to align with any decor. Sandstone finish over fiberglass is one common choice, as the lightweight make-up coupled with a classical finish brings use and art together into an in and outdoor wall fountain. Copper is a different choice material for wall fountains, providing another look to a classical piece. Then again, wall fountains constructed from cast stone, al tho very appealing, will serve a more pragmatic purpose on an outside garden fountain, as the weight of the fountain is more than plausible too much for an indoor surface.
2. Cost- The normal cost of a wall fountain depends largely on two things- material and the size of it. A lightweight fiberglass fountain will for certain weigh a lot lower than a same fountain constructed of cast stone. A 2-foot high fountain will cost considerably less than a 6-foot fountain. But do not be fooled into believing that you are not able to not afford what you truly want, as these types of items have been thought to be only affordable by the rich, and this is further away from the truth. You will be pleasantly amazed at the low prizes for wall fountains, and you will not know till you start searching.
3. Do not restrain Your Shopping Possibilities- you will be able to shop at more garden shops than just only brick and mortar venues. The World Wide Web has brought the world into your living room, and doing online research and shopping is just one of the benefits that has come in with it, with pride on its coattails. Don’t worry, you will find you’re dream fountain that fits you’re style as well as you’re wallet.

2943916150 5f931ce423 Interior Decorating For Small Apartments

So you have a small apartment. You are possibly wondering, how do I make my small space look comfortable and inviting with out looking cluttered? I have your answer. Actually several answers first of all start with looking around, notice the placement of windows and which way the light reflects in the rooms during different times of day. You do not want to blind someone, who could possibly be visiting, by that stunning sunset. Also look at your current furniture and the colors that it is or is not. Some colors can make a room look small, clinical and cold. Good warm toned colors also make it more comfortable for you to live there. Browns, Reds, Yellows, and Oranges are great colors to open up space and make the room warm and inviting. Use accent rugs to help with the addition of colors as some Landlords do not allow you to paint. Sofa Covers are a great way to add color and save from wear and tear on your furniture.

When choosing a color scheme please note that you should choose something that is easy to clean i.e., browns and grays. White is not a good choice, unless you plan on never really living in your place. Try to look at the big picture, small living rooms means that you shouldn’t get a sectional sofa. Instead try a small love seat or futon couch. Not only does the futon couch help with space but it can be converted to a bed for those single room apartments. If you are on a budget and don’t want to get rid of your current bed and you are in a studio apartment try a bed that looks like a bunk bed with out the lower bunk. That way you can store your dress and other articles under the bunk and enclose it with a curtain and no one can see your unmade bed up top. This is very useful for bachelors.

Try creating rooms with the use of decorative screens. It can make a single room look like two or more rooms are there. Also remember your curtains, they should be allowing the light in, the more light you allow in the bigger the space looks. Use a small bistro table as a dining table. It is intimate and makes for a great coffee talk spot. If you are lucky enough to have some one in your apartment remember to always hide your laundry. Laundry laying around makes the apartment appear cluttered and small. Plants are a great way to make your room appear bigger. Try hanging them from the ceiling or by using hooks on the wall. Don’t forget the importance of mirrors. The use of mirrors can make your small apartment look large. Use a focal point and angle your mirror towards it, it gives the illusion of depth. Most importantly make sure you always have a clean space, it is always bigger when it is clean.

Ok so now you have gone and cleaned, you are noticing that the apartment still looks small. Question your storage. You need some ideas for storage you say? Well I am full of them. Look around and if you notice you have lots of magazines lying around get yourself a magazine holder. It is a handy little box that is decorative to your specific likes and it cleans up your tables of clutter. Get your self a footrest that has storage inside of it. It is nice for when the surprise guest comes over and you need to store something quickly. A coffee table with storage underneath it is also a wise choice. The more storage you have that isn’t added clutter makes your life easier. Wall shelves help to eliminate tabletop mess. Put your collectible gnomes on a small wall shelf and look at all the free space you have just created for yourself. All of the suggestions presented here to you are easy do it yourself projects. You can get most of these easy to use items at your local all purpose store and hardware store.

Creating a Butterfly and Hummingbird Garden

With just a little bit of planning, you can have beautiful butterflies and hummingbirds flocking to your garden. That’s good news for gardeners because not only are these winged creatures fun to watch, they’re essential pollinators.

The key is to know what hummingbirds and butterflies look for, which is flowers with nectar. So when you select nectar-rich plants for your garden, look for varieties that are both prolific bloomers and have a long bloom time. Prune your plants to prevent excessive woody growth and encourage the growth of new flowers.

Try these tips from Monrovia, one of the leading growers of plants:

• Hummingbirds are attracted to bright orange, red and hot pink blossoms. Their long, narrow beaks can reach the nectar of long, tubular flowers such as the Balboa Sunset Trumpet Vine with its large scarlet blossoms, and the Goldflame Honeysuckle, which has vibrant yellow and red flowers. Other good choices are the Super Red Flowering Maple and the Navajo series of Salvia, available in many colors, including bright red, rose and salmon red.

• Not all hummingbirds feed at the same height, so plant an array of shrub sizes and climbing vines for food sources.

• Butterflies are attracted to yellow, orange and red. They too are seeking nectar, but their mouths, or proboscises, are much smaller, so they prefer flatter flowers they can perch on while they feed. The no-fail plant for butterflies is the Butterfly Bush, or Buddleja. However, since they can get too large for some gardens, consider the Petite series of Dwarf Butterfly Bushes. Petite Indigo has a profusion of lilac-blue flowers; Petite Plum sports reddish-purple blooms and the Petite Snow has pure white blossoms.

• Lilacs are favorites of butterflies, but don’t typically flower well in climates with warmer winters. The Blue Skies Lilac produces huge clusters of light lavender-blue flowers that don’t require winter chilling. Butterflies love Coneflowers, such as the bright pink Pixie Meadowbrite. Asters are great because they bloom well into fall. The new Farmington Aster has a profusion of lilac bloom clusters that butterflies flock to.

• Supply a source of water. Hummingbirds enjoy flying through a fine mist, which cools them off. Butterflies like drinking from shallow puddles. Position some large flat rocks in a sunny spot, on which butterflies can sun themselves to warm their wings.

Grow Some Interesting Plants You Won’t Find At Your Local Greenhouse.

2284232743 d7a58a1f2d Grow Some Interesting Plants You Wont Find At Your Local Greenhouse.

Do you scour your seed catalogs or look at all the new varieties that have come out in your gardening magazines? You can’t wait to go to your local greenhouse and purchase them for your garden or flower bed. But when you get there, you find they don’t carry that variety.

Why not start them yourself?

So how do you start? First of all make a list of the varieties that look interesting to you. If you are a newbie at seed starting, try and pick some plants that would be easy to grow. There is no use getting discouraged with finicky plants your first time at it. Also keep your list to a minimum. You don’t want to overload yourself in the beginning.

Purchase seeds early enough in the season so that you can give them a good start if they need extra time. If seed companies haven’t been sending you catalogs, then go on the internet and search for seed catalogs and I’m sure you can find some sites that will be happy to send you a catalog.

Some plants need a long growing season, so you will need to start them early in the house if you live in the northern areas of the country. Vegetable plants like tomatoes and peppers or flowers such as impatiens and pansies.

What do you need if you are going to start your own seeds? Clean containers, good soilless seed starting mix, fertilizer, warmth, and plenty of light. You can buy special containers, re-use some from plants you have purchased, or some type of container you have around the house. I use empty milk cartons plenty of times. You can also use the milk cartons for making labels so you remember what seeds are in the container.

Do you happen to have some old seeds from past projects that were never used? See if they are still viable by pre-sprouting. Dampen paper towels, spread out the seeds, and put the folded towel in a bag. Place in a warm area and check every few days. If they haven’t sprouted in 10-14 days, I would give up and throw them out. You can also do this to speed up the germination of new seeds before you plant. Just handle very carefully when planting so you don’t damage the root. This is not good to do with very small seeds.

You are now ready to plant. If you are re-using cell packs or flats, wash first with a mild dish detergent and then dip in a mix of 1 part bleach to 9 parts hot water, let dry. In cell packs, place 2 seeds in each cell to be sure of getting at least one sprouted seed. If two sprout, snip out the weaker of the two with scissors. Very fine seeds could be spread onto a flat filled to the brim for good air flow.

Start at the right time. If started too early, seedlings will get weak and spindly without good lighting. If you don’t have a really good sunny windowsill you will need a special grow light to be sure of good growth.

When it is time to put your plants in the ground, you will want to harden them off for a few days to prepare them for the outdoor environment. One way is to hold off on the water a little and also place them outside for just a few hours a day, increasing the time gradually. In a week they should be able to handle the outside world without transplant shock.

Do you have a little experience starting your own seeds? Maybe you want to try something a little more challenging. How about tree, shrubs, or wildflower seeds? Generally, these seeds need stratification to germinate. That is, they need to go through some cold and moist temperatures plus warmth to break dormancy. Some will want darkness and some light. You need to know the specifics of the plant you want to start.

To stratify your seeds try this method. Sow seeds in moist soilless mix in a plastic container with a tight fitting lid or plastic wrap to hold the moisture and prevent spills. You don’t need a large amount of mix to get them to sprout. Place in the refrigerator for one week and then remove to let them warm up for a day or two. Place in the freezer for one week and then remove to let them warm up again. Alternate this method at least twice before keeping them in a warm environment to allow them to germinate.

If you have some really hard seeds, then you can try scarification by rubbing the seed with sandpaper or an emery board. You can also nick the seed with a knife but be sure not to damage the embryo.

Learning to start seeds can be fun and rewarding but it can also be frustrating if you don’t take time to learn the basics before moving on to the harder to start varieties.

4346322370 3eb658f6db Shower Doors Enhance Showering

If you’ve ever traveled abroad and had to shower in sub-desirable conditions, you know the wonderful feeling of returning home to your own nice hot, big shower. Well, showers have become more that just a watering hole, but are now steam enclosures that act more as a sauna than a shower. How do they work? What are the components? What are some options?

Steam showers use a special panel to serve as a multi-function shower. Like traditional shower door enclosures, glass panels secure the shower area. However, with a steam shower, glass panels are floor to ceiling with a special swivel panel installed. This swivel panel allows steam to escape or stay enclosed in the shower area.

The swivel panel is just a small glass panel that uses a special swivel hinge to rock back and forth creating a small opening. Glass panels also use special vinyl gaskets that contain steam within the shower.

The hinged panel is typically placed at the top of the unit, usually at about 80 inches. It can be small, or rung the length of the shower. The design of the steam shower is one that can be discussed with engineers to create the perfect steam shower.

It is important to open the panel after showering so that moisture does not stay contained within the shower enclosure. This can lead to problems with mold and mildew. Proper maintenance is key to having a long lasting shower door enclosure.

Start having the shower of your dreams today and invest in a steam shower door enclosure. Not only does it enhance your showering experience, but it adds the value of the home.

Lawn mower Batteries Take Care Of Your Work Care for Them

This article describes the type of lawn mower batteries and the way you should care for them. The article details the systematic approach for your lawnmower batteries to make them long lasting.

Why Did You Choose Battery Operated Lawnmower

You have chosen a battery operated lawn mower, as you did not wish mess with fuel requirement, noise and the pollution from your gasoline-operated lawnmower. You did not choose the electric one with the long cord that you be a safety hazard for you and your family member. The battery operated lawnmower will be suitable for areas under 1 acre.

Types of Lawnmower Batteries

Lawnmower batteries are rechargeable batteries working on the principle of chemical generation and storage of electricity. These batteries have been in existence for a long time now and new maintenance free nickel cadmium batteries have come up with advantage over lead acid batteries used for long time in automotives. The types of batteries are,

Alkaline batteries: Used for small capacity portable electric devices. Not used in lawnmowers.

Lead acid batteries: Used in lawnmowers and cars, they are slowly being replaced Nickel cadmium batteries

Nickel cadmium batteries: This is a new type of low maintenance battery. It is replacing lead acid battery nearly everywhere.

Lithium and other types: Presently not used in lawnmowers due to high cost and its storage capacity is low.

Details of Batteries Used In Lawnmowers

As is already said only two types of batteries are used in lawnmowers, the lead acid battery and the nickel cadmium (Ni-Cad for short). The Ni-Cad batteries are better in performance and are environment friendly. The lead acid batteries have to be recycled. They cannot be dumped in garbage. The lead is a dangerous chemical causing lead poisoning. For this reason when you replace the lead acid battery, it has to be taken back to the dealer.

Fixing Plastic Wall Cladding and Ceiling Cladding

3814036310 08c2b2c364 Fixing Plastic Wall Cladding and Ceiling Cladding

You can make fixing wall cladding and ceiling cladding easier and do work of better quality by following certain standard procedures. We look at certain key procedures in the following sections. There is no attempt to include all the finer points. Instead the aim is to give an overview and indicate some key points that need attention.

The first step is to fix the bottom and top edge pieces, by screwing them to the wall. Next comes the task of sliding the cladding sheets into these pieces. Once the sheet is in place, the horizontal joints are attached to the vertical ends of the sheets and screwed into the wall. Next comes fixing internal and external angles at corners, and around doors and windows.

We look at these fixing steps in a little more detail below.

Top and Bottom Edges

All four edges of all sheets must be secured to the wall. In most cases, J edges, H joints and internal/external angles can do the job. Where necessary, Maxbash Skirting can be used at the bottom instead of a J edge. For very uneven walls, two-piece joints can be used between sheets.

Where only wall cladding is being installed, the top edges can also be secured using a J edge. If ceiling cladding is also being installed, you might prefer trapping the top of the wall cladding sheets with the ceiling. Alternatively, a 2-piece internal corner is used as a coving.

Good quality silicone beading is used between the wall and J edge/Maxbash skirting to seal them permanently to the wall and floor.

Fixing Cladding Sheets

Flex a cladding sheet into the top and bottom J edges and fit a one-piece H joint to the vertical edge of the sheet, leaving necessary space for any expansion in the sheet. Secure the joint to the wall.

Now flex in a second sheet into the J edges and H joint and fix a joint on the other vertical edge of the sheet. Continue the procedure till the walls are fully covered.

Silicone sealant is used between sheets and J edges/H joints to seal the sheets.

Corners

Corners are typically fixed using internal and external angles. If the corners are not square, a universal angle is used. This type of angle has a flexible center that can be bent to a desired degree.

General

The above outline is intended only to give a general idea. There could be finer points that need to be mastered to solve specific problems in actual working. For these, you can refer to the instruction manual that comes with the sheets. Do take the trouble to go through the manual carefully. It could mean the difference between quality work and less-than-perfect work.

Conclusion

This article outlined how cladding sheets are fixed to walls. The typical procedure is to screw the bottom and top J edges first, flex a sheet into them, fix an H joint to the vertical edge of the sheet, add the next sheet into this joint as well the its own J edges, and so on.

Corners are fixed using internal and external angles.

Good quality silicone sealant is used to ensure waterproof sealing of the entire surface.
